| Who’s the first person that comes
to mind when you mention smooth R&B
grooves? And who has a voice that makes the ladies melt like
butter? C’mon, we could only be talking about Mr. G
Spot himself, Gerald Levert. The legendary multi platinum-selling
artist, with a discography that has captured a wide and loyal
fan base from generation to generation, took time from his
busy schedule to talk to us about his career and offer some
words of wisdom.
For those of you possibly living under a rock, Gerald
Levert catapulted himself to the R&B sensation title
with his debut as the
Lead singer in Levert in 1985. In 1991 Gerald proved that
he was just as
enigmatic by becoming a triple threat (songwriter, performer
and
producer)with his solo debut, Private Line. Whether he’s
apart of a group or shining as a solo artist, Gerald Levert
has not only maintained his signature smooth as velvet
voice and heart felt lyrics but has proven his longevity
with a career that spans nearly 20 years. And now, he’s
back with a new album Do I
Speak For The World. With an industry inundated with
inflated egos, one-hit wonders and marginal talent, it
is definitely refreshing to speak with a true musical legend
with humility and respect for others, regardless of their
status level in the entertainment industry…curious?

MahoganyGirl: First I have to say how honored I am to
be able to have this
interview with you! I’ve grown up on your music and
I’m so excited to
talk with you today. So, I’m sure everyone wants
to know what your
inspiration is for your new album Do I Speak For
The World?
Gerald Levert: Well this is definitely a different album
from those
which my fans are used to. This one is more of a coming
of age story. My
experiences are different now and I’ve become more
aware of issues in
society. Like before, most of my music was predominantly
romantic. But
now I have teenage children. [Chuckles] Which makes me
want to create music
that will set more of an example. That’s not to say
that I won’t ever
sing a love song, but maybe not to the extent that I have
in the past.
MG: I can definitely understand that!
From one artist to
another I have to say that I really admire your ability
to maintain
your craft and be consistent in your trade. So, in the
current industry
where marketability has become a stronger factor than actual
talent, how do
you continue to be authentic?
GL: I mainly focus on my performance and my ability to
transition with
The times without losing my true self. I look to Quincy
Jones as my form of
inspiration because he came into the industry with his
own sound and
style. But, he wasn’t afraid to work with other new
or different
artists like Michael Jackson and incorporate aspects of
their new sound so that
he could continue to be relevant. And that’s the
key, you have to be open
to new sounds and spots in order to make it your own. Plus,
you have to
keep studying the craft so that you’re always on
the cutting edge.
MG: That is so true…so, not to get heavy and formal…but
the ladies would
like to know if you’re single or dating or looking….
[Chuckling Softly]
GL: [Laughs] I like to say that I’m patient…I’ve
been with
many different people, even engaged at one time. But I
think the most
important thing now is that I’m looking to be very
equally yoked.
MG: Hmmmm so then you’re very single and not dating
anyone?! [Laughing]
GL: [Pauses…. Laughs] Hmmm I
would say that I’m
dating but not serious.
[More laughter] I haven’t met someone who has been
able to successfully
compete with my music, which has always come first so far.
When I meet
someone who can make music second, then it’ll be
serious.
MG: Okay… So you’ve worked with so many different
artists
during your career, is there anyone that you consider your
favorite person to
work with?
GL: There’s no one that I’ve hated working
with. Almost everyone in
this industry is temperamental but the key is in knowing
how to work with or
around those personalities. I’ve always believed
that you should never
burn your bridges because you never know when you have
to work with
that person again.
MG: Wow, how do you stay so grounded! I’ve talked
to indie artists who
seem to already have the inflated egos and you have an
amazing career yet
you’re so down to earth!
GL: [Laughter] Well, I feel that I’ve been so blessed
to be given the
talents that I have that I should truly respect them rather
than abuse
them. Plus, I grew up watching my father working in entertainment.
And
he taught me how to be real, how to stay consistent to
myself and most
Importantly, to never burn my bridges.
MG: So, everyone knows that you’re a mastermind
at music, and we want
to know…is LSG (Levert, Sweat, Gill) ever coming
back! I loved the music
and I think fans would agree, we would love to see a reunion!
GL:
Well…if the opportunity presents itself, I
would definitely be up
for it. Many people didn’t realize that we actually
did put out a second
album, but it didn’t have as much success as the
first album. I think
that part of that is due to the fact that we were all
more focused on our
independent projects rather than the group project…but
I’m definitely
up for doing another LSG album.
MG: So one last question for you…do you have any
words of advice or
guidance for up and coming artists?
GL: Patience and studying. This isn’t an industry
with overnight
success. It may look like that to the public, but it’s
really a lot of “hurry up and wait”. And while
you’re being patient, study on the trade. Make a
note of what’s current for the times, and blend
that with your own style.
This keeps you successful and relevant. I feel that a lot
of my success is
due to the fact that I was blessed to stay current with
the times and
trends.
MG: Wow, I’m so blown away by this interview! I
just have to say thank
you so much for taking the time out of your busy schedule
to speak with me.
Thank you so much! [Laughs]
GL: Not at all…thank you, this has been one of
the best interviews I’ve
had all day!
Gerald Levert’s new album Do
I Speak For The World…Drops on November
30.
